Last night when things were going out of control, I felt the urge to self-harm. And being someone who does a lot of awareness talk about mental health, I realized that my trigger to self-harm is the feeling of losing control, or the trial of making me realize how I can control few things, like pain!
I don’t self-harm, I instead hold an ice-cube in my hand. It relieves the compulsion in a less destructive way.
I am not a therapist, nor I have done any in-depth study of this subject, I am just a person dealing with anxiety disorder. In past few years I have discovered a lot of ways that keep me sane. Though the first few months, after I was diagnosed with this, it was a struggle. But then it got easier and easier, and I lived, and now I keep living.
Sharing some anxiety hacks that I recommend.
Anxiety hacks –
Anxiety can feel overwhelming and impossible to overcome but there are definitely some great anxiety hacks that can be very helpful in managing the situation.
When anxiety causing thoughts arise, start mentally describing objects or action you see in your vicinity as if you are narrating a story. This will distract your brain from spiraling down that dreaded black hole and help you deal with your anxiety.
The next time you feel like you have lost control of your surroundings, look around and by working backward from 5 use your senses to list things you notice around. –
- 5 things you can see
- 4 things you can touch
- 3 things you can hear
- 2 things you smell
- 1 thing you can taste
This is one of the anxiety hacks, that can easily redirect your thoughts away from distressing feelings and back to the present.
2. Find your calm
Try to figure out what calms you, and the next time you find yourself drowning in a pool of anxiety get indulged in your chosen activity.
Some activities that can act as great anxiety hacks and can provide a dose of calm –
Sharing a poem I wrote recently to heal and calm myself!
Find what that thing is within you that you are drawn to and use it in a positive sense to get over your anxiety. This is one of the anxiety hacks that helps me the most.
3. Anxiety Coping Statements
Repeating a sentence filled with positive vibes helps a lot in staying calm. This is one of the anxiety hacks that encourages one to connect to the inner self, and tell one’s self something positive when the brain is filled with negative thoughts.
4. Self-Esteem Journal
Prepare a self-esteem journal for a week, follow the rules given below and write every single day for 7 days continuously.
Monday – Something you did well today…
Tuesday – You felt good about yourself when…
Wednesday – You had a positive experience with…
Thursday – 3 good thing about you…
Friday – Something good you did for someone…
Saturday – Something you achieved today…
Sunday – Today you overcame….
Continue to write if you feel that this anxiety hack works for you.
5. Breathing Exercises
The best and easiest anxiety hacks are breathing exercises.
Tagging a breathing exercise I totally recommend.
A fact I stumbled upon on Pinterest recently –
“There’s a song that’s been proven to reduce anxiety by 65%. This is called Weightless by Marconi Union. The song was written and produced to actually slow down your heart rate, reduce blood pressure, and lower cortisol levels.
6. Talk to someone close
Talking and sharing your thoughts is the most helpful anxiety hack that someone can look up-to. Consult a therapist and s/he can help you in untangling your tangled thoughts. You can even have a conversation with a friend or a family member. You never know how much sharing thoughts can help you in staying calm unless you give it a try. You might hesitate at first but once you get to see the magic of sharing thoughts it won’t be that tough to talk about your thoughts and your triggers. Be honest and authentic about your thoughts and you will be able to find beauty in all the imperfections.
It’s not necessary to tell the whole world about your problems and your triggered thoughts but at least share it with people around you. It will make you feel light. Strange how talking and sharing thoughts can be one of the anxiety hacks, so simple yet so struggling to practice.
I hope you love yourself a little bit more today than you did yesterday, I hope these anxiety hacks help you and make your mental health better.
